in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devils
Postpile National Monument protects and
preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the
101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine
mountain scenery. The formation is a rare
sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of
the world's finest examples of columnar basalt.
Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an
unusual symmetry.

The Ansel Adams Wilderness; The wilderness
includes the North Fork, Middle Fork and lower
South Fork San Joaquin River, spectacular alpine
scenery, and deep granite-walled gorges. Lower
elevations have scattered benches and small
plateaus. Perennial streams and several lakes
can be found within the wilderness. There is a
variety of wildlife and fish. The wilderness is
the summer range for deer. Elevations vary from
7,000 to 14,000 feet, with the central part of
the wilderness containing many
lakes.
- --
John Muir Wilderness: The wilderness is
characterized by snow-capped mountains, hundreds
of alpine lakes and streams. Elevations within
the wilderness range from 4,000 feet to more
than 14,000 feet.
- --
Rainbow Falls: Just two miles downstream from
the
Postpile formation lies Rainbow
Falls, once called "a gem unique and worthy of
its name." The Falls drop an impressive 101 feet

that form in its mist.
